William Jewell of Nebraska

Since 1850

A Family Passion

William Jewell of Nebraska wrote his first recipe for a distilled spirit in the 1850’s. He spent much of his life practicing the art of distilling alcohol. William’s death and the tighter restrictions on liquor leading up to Prohibition, resulted in an intermission in the Jewell’s distilling. The recipes lay dormant and forgotten until Gary G. Jewell revived the recipe in 1969. Gary was traveling overseas and was disappointed by what passed for quality spirits. He spent the next 30 years experimenting with his great grandfather’s recipes and honing his skills as a distiller. Gary, with the help of his son Jefferson and daughter Heather, opened Black River Distillery in 2016.
